The Spanish American War was fought on two main fronts; Cuba and the Philippines. Both island nations were colonized and ruled by Spain.

Cubans began openly revolting against Spanish rule in 1895. Americans were sympathetic to the nationalists' plight and what was perceived as heavy handed social injustices committed  by Spain.

In February of 1898, the USS Maine was patrolling in Havana Harbor. It was mysteriously blown up and sank with 260 US sailors losing their lives.  The explosion was blamed on Spain and was the spark that ignited the war between the United States and Spain with major battles being fought in Manila Bay of the Philippines and Cuba.
